Tips for gathering evidence to demonstrate your skills

The important thing to remember when gathering evidence is that the more evidence the better - that is, the more evidence you gather to demonstrate your skills, the more confident an assessor can be that you have learned the skills not just at one point in time, but are continuing to apply and develop those skills (as opposed to just learning for the test!). Furthermore, one piece of evidence that you collect will not usualy demonstrate all the required criteria for a unit of competency, whereas multiple overlapping pieces of evidence will usually do the trick!

MEM48030 - Apply materials selection analysis techniques

What evidence can you provide to prove your understanding of each of the following citeria?

Apply materials science principles to manufacturing or engineering materials selection requirement

  1. Identify required materials from design or material selection brief
  2. Identify required material functions, required material processing and commercial and environmental parameters
  3. Search databases and reference materials for relevant data
  4. Prepare list of constraints and objectives for required materials selection
  5. Identify any requirement for expert technical or professional assistance
  6. Identify material property constraints
  7. Identify commercial and environmental constraints
  8. Eliminate materials that cannot meet constraints
  9. Identify and rank least constrained materials

Select materials for manufacturing or engineering requirement

  1. Review material selection objectives against list of least constrained materials
  2. Select potential materials and arrange appropriate tests to confirm suitability
  3. Review test results and use the information in the selection process
  4. Select materials and provide alternatives based on review and testing
  5. Produce materials selection report including traceability records for material selection process, recommendations, and supporting data
